The End Is Nigh ... errr maybe?

Contractions ... stop and start .... start and stop ... blah blah blah blah blah ... 20 minutes apart ... 15 minutes apart ... 10 minutes apart ... stop ...

Arrrrgghhhh!! Enough already!!

This baby and my body has 23 hours to do this on its own (which is what I am wishing for) or we go in the morning to be induced (which is fine too but I wanted to go on my own first because it happens faster that way for me).

Things to know:

This is the 4th time I am doing this.

This is the last time I am doing this.

I have gone 100% natural and thought I would die from the blinding pain.

I have done the painfree way and was quite blissfull.

I have been induced.

I have been a surrogate mother as well.

I was 20 the first time.

I am 6 months shy of 40 this last time.

The shortest time in labor - 2hours and 15 minutes.

The longest time in labor - 4 hours.

I have given birth to both sexes.

For me, boy pregnancies have been the hardest.

I know the pain and sorrow of miscarriage, my own and surrogate.

None of this is new to me.

It is the waiting and the waiting and the hurry up and waiting that makes me insane.

Q and A:

For those of you who have had pregnancies of both boys and girls did you find there was a distinct difference in the pregnancy of a boy and a girl?

What is the shortest and longest time you were in labor?

Can you remember the sound of that first cry? (I can. VERY distinctly.)

I dreamed last night we had a boy but the nurses kept bringing us a girl from the nursery. I am now paranoid and insist that the black sharpie in my purse be used to mark the bottom of the baby's foot before it ever leaves my sight. Am I completely insane now?

I'm reading your blog frequently, looking for updates, for news! I am so excited for you and your soon to be here baby!!

I remember the sound of the first cry. There's nothing like it. It carried with it so many emotions for me, relief being the biggest.

I was six weeks shy of 40, and it was my first, and maybe, hopefully, not my last.

My pregnancy with the girl was very different from my pregnancy with the boy, but in my case the girl pregnancy was much more difficult and yucky. Horrible hyperemesis, sciatica, reflux, heart fibrillation, you name it.

Shortest labor was 5.5 hours, but that's because he was breech and I had a c-section. It would have gone on much longer otherwise.

With the girl, I was in labor for 80 hours. EIGHTY! Of course, the doctors only count the last 16 hours because the rest was prodromal, but I felt every single one of those contractions and I want credit for them!

I don't remember the cries very clearly, but I do remember the first time I laid eyes on both of them. The boy child was HUGE and looked like a little old man. The girl child looked just like my mom.

Angie, I'm thinking of you and hoping you will be holding that gorgeous, healthy little boy in your arms very soon! I'm sure you must feel like you have been pregnant forever!

First one: Feb. 19th, boy, very easy pregnancy, was totally out for the birth and didn't hear the cry. I was nearly dead from the anesthesia for 48 hours. Labor was 4 hours only.
Second: July 15th, girl, very easy, but hot and stressful during that time. Baby induced, since we were moving in 3 weeks from her due date. Labor 2 1/2 hours, first cry was lovely.
Third: Oct. 18th girl, very easy pregnancy. Baby induced, since my labors were so short, they thought I may not make it to the hosp. in time. Labor 2 hrs. start to finish. This one was natural, since the epidural did not take effect until after she was born. I don't remember the first cry - just the pain.

Angie, I am praying for you to go soon!

I had contractions for three days before I was ready. I believe you've read about that experience already. But the pushing part took less than 45 minutes, with only about 8 minutes of actual pushing. I was amazed at how easy that part was!

The nurse told me not to expect the baby to cry right away, like in the movies. But she did. She let out a wail the moment she was born. Ironically, she hardly ever cried after that!

I'm so excited about you. Sounds like this baby will be here SOON! I can't wait to see a picture! :) Good luck, Angie!!!

Hurray! Contractions- stop stopping! Angie wants to see this baby already!

I only imagine my future childrens' first cries. I'm sure it must be one of the most beautiful things you'll ever hear.

Pregnancies? The boy was much much easier.
Labor? 12 hours with the son/8 hours with the girlie.
No first cry memories for the son, but I remember the daughter's.
And as for the Sharpie...it's a great idea. GREAT. Because, and I'm not kidding...they switched my son with another baby boy in the hospital. Within weeks they had adapted whole new security policies and installed alarms and things. What could've been a nightmare ended up being nothing more than a foolish error...but as I type this, my stomach still gets a bit knotted.

And you...I'm so excited for you! Wishing you and your family all the best.

Hooray! It's going to be a great day!!!!!

It was different in how much sicker I was in the night with my son, although I was sick both morning and night with both. My cravings and what smells bothered were also different.

Even after 19 days late with my daughter, I did not recognize I was in labor. It was entirely different than what I was told would happen. With my son they induced me after 21 days and begging them. Both were about 5 hours.

If a sharpie gives you peace of mind then bring it, just be sure your husband puts it in his pocket. Praying all goes well and it happens soon!

Only girls here :) It will be tonight or tomorrow - at least we know that for sure. Keep that sharpie handy because you'll need it soon!!

I am so excited for you. I do remember that first cry! The sweetest sound ever. It is such a relief after all those months of worrying!
My labor was premature and I was induced so after two days, they decided for a C-section. I hope with baby #2 to get to do it naturally. Congratualations!

I actually had an easier time while pregnant with my son. No morning sickness, no pains & VERY easy labor. I pushed twice and then I was done. I did have to be on Petocin (sp?) because I went in with a high tear in my water that fixed itself within an hour of me being admitted. Two days (yes DAYS) later is when the easy delivery came into play.

With The Girl, I could barely walk because my hip hurt (is that when they sit on the sciatic nerve? Can't remember). I would get heartburn from a glass of water & could not sleep. But it was also a very easy delivery. I was already dialated to 5cm by the time I was checked in (too late for drugs. D'OH!). I was admitted at about 8:30 and she was born at 1:15.

And the first cry was beautiful! They grow so fast and sometimes it seems like I've had them forever. Then other times it feels like just yesterday that I heard that sound.

Love your blog & best of luck with this delivery. Here's hoping your body decides to cooperate before you have to be induced!

I have a strong feelign you are in the hospital now.

I had to girls. Both natural. Rachel was an incredibly intense ride, five hours, thanks to Petocin, and it could have gone south very fast. No option of epidural there.

With Hannah it went 2 1/2 hours, again intense, but no pitocin, so less panic. I chose not to have an epidural in this case because I could tell I was going fast and didn't want to slow it down. I knew what to expect because of the first labor.

I'm thinking about friends with girls and boys....I don't think there is a pattern of difference, but that's not a scientific answer.

I have been pregnant 3 times.
My first was a boy ~ terrible pregnancy sick beyond anything uncomfortable etc. I was in labour for 18 1/2 hours then ended with a C-section.

Pregnancy 2 ended in miscarriage

Pregnancy 3. Girl. Good pregnancy not so sick at all, and felt good. Near the end I had very sore pelvic bones and couldn't walk. Planned c-section :)

Hi Angie,
I've had one of each. Boy - tough pregnancy (4 months of worshipping the porcelain god and then gained over 100lbs. I'm tall, but not tall enough to carry an extra 100lbs!! Don't worry, I lost it all!) - long labor, but not overly miserable. Passed point of no return for epidural. So, no drugs... Yay.

Girl - easier pregnancy (didn't worship as long at the porcelain god station... gained only about 75lbs with her...) Again, no epidural... not happy about that still... 11 years ago this was, mind you.

First cry - remember it was sweet.. that's about it... Boy was whisked away because he was meconium baby. Girl was quiet - still is... not fussy at all... even tempered... Ahhh such sweet memories.. :-)

I hope you are in the hospital now delivering!!

I am hoping that you are having that baby right now or he is already here. It is 9:00pm eastern time!

Good thoughts for a healthy and happy baby and momma!

I will be thinking of you and your family!

I guess you'll be keeping that appointment in the morning? Well, good luck Angie. I'll be thinking about you. Let us know what time you're scheduled to be induced if you post again before you go to the hospital. And please get your husband to give us an update ASAP!!!! I'm so excited!!! :)

Not insane. Muffin Man had a very distintive ear (it looked like he'd held onto it tightly in the womb, it straightened out after about a week) I was so pleased, 'cause it meant I'd know if they brought me a different baby.

Posted by: liz at February 7, 2006 02:41 PM

Four pregnancies. Two boys and two girls. I was sicker with the boys, but I did find out about taking vitamin B6 twice a day for nausea when I was girl-preggers. Who knows?

Labors?
1. 21 hours
2. 11 hours
3. 12 hours
4. 10 hours

My water broke 6 days late with the first one, but nothing happened, so they gave me pitocin. Other 3 were induced a week early.

Those first hours after they were born were the BEST moments in my life. I felt high.
