Last Weekend Recap
Much to my surprise last weekend was a very enjoyable weekend with my family. My sister was NOT her usual loud, rude, obnoxious self and that made for the most amazing treat! I actually could like her a lot more if she was that way all of the time.
Please do NOT confuse like and love. I love my sister ALL of the time even when she is driving me insane. I do not always like her and I think that is very o'kay even with your husband, children, parents and anyone else around you. You do not always have to like people all of the time.
So anyway -
We swam. We rode around. We did target practice. We cooked. We ate. We made margaritas. We laughed. We joked. We napped. We went to bed at a descent time. We rose before 8am. We ate alot. We shopped. We talked. We did it all.
They are planning to return in July.
Thank you for the notice. I have plenty of time to plan for it.
On Saturday night I took all of the kids, including baby Steven to the movies -by myself. Me, Colby, Gracie, Amber, Cyle and Steven. To the movies. At 10:40. PM. Yes, I did!
We had a good time! We had popcorn, candy and cokes. Steven watched the first 20 minutes of the movie with alert fascination. I marveled at his facial expressions. The he nursed for 20 minutes or so in the bearly empty and very dark movie theater and slept through the rest of the movie, the ride home, the clothing change and being put into his bed. He was a real trooper. Never made a peep in the theater. I was so pleased. He acted like a big boy. Which shocks me really. I have never given birth to a baby that acts like a baby -or my idea of what babies should act like.
What was that?
What did we see?
Over the Hedge.
This was a cute movie. Alot of the comedy is lost on children. If you have ever lived in an HOA community you will be right at home and the endless bits and bites of humor will tickle your funny bone.
Now on the BigRedCouch rating scale for movies in which Shrek is the measure by which all animated movies are measured. Shrek being the whole hawg with extra-buttered popcorn, gummie bears AND peanut M&M's mixed together with a giant coke to wash it all down with in my kids fashion of creating a perfect movie viewing treat I give this movie a popcorn and coke rating. It was cute entertainment appealing to the children because of the talking rodents and whatnot.
Go see it. Take your kids. Buy popcorn. Have fun.
Do not be like the parents sitting in the row ahead of us with their two children probably 10 and 12 years old. No drink. No popcorn. No nothing but some leftover food of some sort the mother had in her bag that the little girl chewed on. I mean really. These people were well dressed and looked as if they could have affored at least a small popcorn for their kids to share.
Am I the only person who doesn't make their kids sit through the movie with no popcorn? Am I the only parent who doesn't think the movie is the entire treat?
I am sorry but movies without popcorn is just no fun. It might be like mama without the razzi. Which you should check out. Susie Sunshine is posting over there today.
Go on. Go give Susie some comments love. Please.

I totally agree! Popcorn and soda are the way to go!
What a successful weekend, Angie! All of your children was be fantastic to behave so well.
It is possible the family only had money for the movie which in and of itself was/is the treat for the entire family.
Or maybe they only eat health food and movie popcorn doesn't qualify.
As for being dressed nice....Maybe they are poor but have enough pride in themselves to dress up when going out in public. Not all poor people go out in public dressed like bums.
I don't know you and I don't know the family you wrote about but, I can't help but wonder how often you judge based solely on appearance.
The mother had rings on her finger that would make you swoon and a leather bag. I say they were not unable to afford the extras. First impressions do say alot. Don't be holier than thou and pretend you have never taken in another family and just knew something about them from their behavior.
Popcorn or no, I heard that Over the Hedge is pretty funny. I love movies for children that have jokes that only adults could get. I agree with you about Shrek--it was fantastic.
I have to say, I enjoy the full-on movie experience. Popcorn, soda, sno-caps, quiet whispers in the dark, I kind of miss the days when the theater experience was the standard. Then again, if it weren't for DVDs and HBO, all you parents with little 'uns would never get to see a grown-up movie.
Thank you for the movie review! I have wanted to take my daughter (age 5), but was concerned that it would be...a little rough.
After my last mistake (we saw Cheaper by the Dozen 2! On Christmas! AVOID THIS MOVIE!), I have avoided ALL new movies like the Plague.
Thanks to your review, we are planning to see "Over the Hedge" in the next week or so. I will be buying popcorn. And Coke. And Sour Patch Kids.
We, too, rate everything based on the Shrek factor. We really enjoyed Over The Hedge. It was way cuter than I'd imagined it to be after the recent cartoon movie disappointments...that I can't even remember the names of.
Glad you had a good time with your sister, too.
The movie theater near us will deliver a pizza into the theater for you. We like to take the whole clan and have a movie night complete with pizza, popcorn, candy, sodas, etc. Of course, it ends up costing us about two months pay, but how often is there a movie worth paying theater prices to see anymore?
You were brave to take them all to the movie!
See Angie, I've always looked at the show times for kids movies and exclaimed, "Who the heck takes kids to a movie at 10:30 P.M.?!"
It's you, Angie, it's you.
We go for the popcorn. For Hannah it's all about the food right now. When the food funs out, she's out of her seat.
Growing up we really didn't have much money, but my mom would pop up a huge batch of popcorn and we'd fill lunch bags and all have a good treat there.
When we lived in New York City (we were in college), my Dad was famous for sneaking in pints of ice-cream. That was when theaters didn't sell ice-cream. I wasn't there, apparently once he bought everyone their own pint of Ben and Jerry's. My stomach hurts thinking about it.
Maybe that family was me and mine? We have food allergies and can't eat the artificial crap they pass off as popcorn and the corn syrup in the soda would send my kids over the edge and give you more fodder to blog about. Plus? I'd rather spend money on a nice leather bag than spend $50 on fatty food and sugar at the movie theater. I'm just sayin'...
I took my kids to see Over the Hedge Memorial Day weekend. We enjoyed it.
No treats at the movies, though. Do to a missing shoe issue, we made it there just in the nick of time--raced right up the hallway to the right screening room--did not pass Go, did not buy popcorn. But we're not that big on eating at the movies, anyway--one popcorn between four of us is plenty.
I always at least buy a popcorn or candy. My kids aren't that big on the popcorn though. But, I do buy candy bars before and sneak them in my purse. I'm not paying $3.50 for a Crunch bar I can buy at 7-11 for $1.
With a 3 year old who is a type 1 diabetic we often sneak in snacks that he can eat a lot of and not worry about high blood sugars. Popcorn and candy do NOT fit the bill. We also take in sugar free pop because they usually don't have sugar free that is caffeine free. It's possible this child shared like restrictions.
Well I agree with everyone. Yes popcorn is good and a must at the show if that's your thing, and yes diet restrictions and taste for food have a factor too.. I also want to add it's nearly 11pm at night and they probably just finished a late dinner and simply weren't in the mood for snacks. Whatever the case may be I hope they all had a good time.
I also want to add that I LOVE to people watch and make my own comments about them. It's all done in fun really!
Oh also... how much does it cost to get into a movie where you live? Here it's $8.18 per person yes that includes children two years old and up so for us to get into the show it costs $32.72 and popcorn and pop for two of us costs $15.00 or more depending on if we get "butter" which is an extra $0.50 as well as a large pop or not. It's ridiculous I tell ya! I'm so hopping to go to the drive in this summer with the kids.
