Gone

The 98 - 100 year old apple tree in my backyard is gone.

We woke this morning to rain. I paid it no mind and went about getting Gracie ready for school. As daylight came Gracie says, "Everything is whitish but not frost." I did not pay much attention and went on with getting the fires roaring and other things like pouring coffee down my throat.

She went out to the bus and I saw what she meant. Everything was dripping in ice.The trees where groaning under the weight and all of the box wood were bowed down. I could hear cracking and popping and a big crash but thought it was over at the neighbors.

The rain picked up and I went in to get the keys for the truck so I could run down and let Gracie stay warm and dry while she waited. When I went out to the truck I instantly saw the tree. It had broken. Not just broken but the weight had pulled it by the roots from the ground. It missed the front of three of our vehicles by a foot. I moved the trucks back to take photos.

It was a beautiful tree that bloomed and gave welcome shade in the summer.

It's time has passed.

We lost our apple tree in the same manner (literally uprooted) but because of heavy rains and ground saturation. Every time I see old pictures of the tree in bloom it makes me cry.

Wow Angie, that stinks! Was it rotted in the middle?

We had a big tree fall down during our last storm, but it had been dead for a while.

That is really too bad about the old tree, Angie, but luckily, it didn't fall on anyone or your house.

So lucky about the cars! Thank goodness it missed them!

That is so sad about the tree. Was it still giving fruit?

It's funny how attached we can feel to a tree. I remember feeling upset when my parents' apple tree was taken out by a winter storm. I had climbed it hundreds of times, and my children had climbed it too.

I'm surprised you guys had school with that much ice.

Aw, there is just something about apple trees, isn't there? That is too bad it had to go, but lucky there was no property damage along with it.

And hey -- applewood-smoked chicken! I know you won't let it go to waste!

I'm so sorry about the tree but so glad you didn't lose the cars too.

Will you plant another one? I know it won't be the sam but you'll beave it for the next generation and the one after that.

So glad nobody was hurt when that fell.
It looks like it was once very beautiful.
Perhaps each of the kids can plant a new one?

Wow! In that 3rd photo it looks like it was rotted in the middle. Lucky that it didn't hit the truck! It always amazes me the damage that ice can do.
