Thirteen Things about Angie
1. I have not seen the movie but I have the soundtrack for Walk The Line. Wow! Joaquin Phoenix! Who knew that boy could sing? 2. I spent yesterday in a pre-diabetes class for gestational diabetes. The doctor recommended stressed ordered that I attend the classes and follow the 'self management' program because I failed the fasting blood glucose test with a 95mg/dL. According to everything I have read and all the research I can find the target for pregnancy is between 60 and 100 mg/dL for fasting. How did I fail? I am seriously going to question him next week about the results and also question who set the target levels and why are they below all others I can find? 3. I am pricking my fingers 4 times a day and using a freestyle monitoring machine. I have to test my glucose every morning before I eat, 1 hour after every meal. It doesn't hurt but after a few days I wonder if my finger tips will be sore. 4. I am told that I have to eat 3 meals and 2 snacks. What I am supposed to be eating in many cases is way more than we are accustomed to eating. I had to force myself to eat a sandwich before bedtime last night. Eating before you go to bed is what makes you pack on the pounds. 5. They better not say 1 word when they see how the pounds will jump onto me FAST. I mean super fast. We do not eat that much food in a day. What are they thinking? I'll have to start eating the time my eyes pop open until bedtime. :-/ 6. Steven went with me to the classes. He has been very diligent and helps me test by getting everything ready and prepping the machine. He is such a good nurse. 7. While we sat in the class yesterday watching a video I took his hand and laid it across my stomach. Bump. Bump. Bump. Bump. In perfectly timed rythm. The baby had hiccups that lasted almost 10 minutes. 8. Sometimes I am easily amused and entertained. 9. It is raining here today. I can but I refuse to walk in the rain. 10. Having needed an antibiotic to get over a very bad head cold/sinus infection, having suddenly developed laryngitis I don't think it is such a good idea to walk around in the cold and rain this morning even though I am supposed to walk daily. 11. I have no idea what to prepare for supper tonight. I am sick of food and it being thrust in my face all day long. 12. I am listening to Johnny Cash. I got several nice cd's and books for Christmas. They make it very easy to do nothing but sit with earphones and read. 13. Johnny is cool as hell but George Strait is the man. Yummy. He has an innocent yet very playful and mischeivious smile -just like my Steven -who is also very yummy. Links to other Thursday Thirteens! MommaK Raehan

After Christmas

The holidays have kicked my butt big time. Seriously.

The Eve of Christmas

| | Comments (13)
When I was a child I remember Christmas Eve being the longest day ever. Time seemed to stand still. All the magic and joy and wonder of Christmas left me breathless and excited. I can't remember being asked what I would like to have. We never knew what we would get from Santa it was always the biggest surprise. We did know that whatever he brought us would be the greatest things ever. On Christmas Eve at my grandparents we would get a light supper and we could have anything we wanted to eat. Even if it was just chocolate cake or red velvet cake. I think the glass of cold milk made it all okay. That we could eat anything even cake may be the one greatest memory of my childhood. My mother and grandmother were a stickler about meals and we never not got to pig out on junk food except at Christmas. Christmas eve at my grandparents found all of my mother's brothers and sisters and their children. Over the years there was a mix of boyfriends and girlfriends and fiances. My grandfather took those moments during the exchanging of gifts to embarass the visitors. Girls ALWAYS got some skimp lacey split crotch panties and the guys got some wild boxers or something to ensure blushing. It made my grandfather's day to do this and everyone never knew what to expect because he singled out one poor hapless guest do it to. Coming from blue collar working class people my grandfather rarely drank but sometimes might have a vodka and orange juice on Christmas Eve. My grandmother, being Baptist, was totally upset by any drinking whatsoever but whatever my grandfather did on Christmas Eve seemed okay. I can't remember her getting upset. One year my grandfather decided the occassion called for wine. Oh!!!! He was really high class. Only the best of Mogan David for him. One year he got so sloshed we children sat in amazement as Santa came through the front door bearing gifts and my grandfather hoisted him up like a bride crossing the threshhold and carrie dhim and the toys away. Christmas Eve was always the same every single year. The family would gather at my grandparents. Everyone had to eat. The supper dishes and kitchen had to be cleaned. Then we would all be called into the living room. We kids would scramble for a place on the floor waiting for our pile of brightly wrapped packages to begin piling up as my youngest aunt crawled under the tree and began doling out the presents. The opening of the gifts was done in order of youngest to oldest. Can you imagine being the oldest grandchild and having to wait while 5 or 6 younger grandchildren open 20 or more gifts? As more and more grandchildren were born it seemed to take forever to get to be my turn. Once we opened the gifts we could not play with them. We had to sit and watch everyone else open their gifts "because they waited and watched up open our gifts". Afterwards the gifts were packed into cars, people gathered int he kitchen and nibbled and snacked then everyone went home. By the time we got home we had to go to bed so Santa could come. Christmas morning!!!! Ohhhhhh, we had the hardest time sleeping. We were not allowed to be up before 5am. I remember one year my uncle tried to stretch it 4:30 and it was a no go. At 5am the house came alive. We tore into the gifts from Santa with delight and joy. Santa presents were NEVER wrapped. Only gifts from family and friends called for wrapping. Bicycles, skates, minibikes, so many things we were given. The year I got my first pair of skate I was out on the sidewalk at 5am and had bloody knees by 5:15am. Oh that was a great day -not! You have an idea of the kind of Christmas I enjoyed as a child. It is that same sense of wonder and magic that I want for my own children. I want to see the excitement, the belief in magic and complete and total innocence of believing Santa will come while they sleep. While Christmas Eve is for Santa Christmas Day is for the Lord. Never once in all of the excitement and secrets and magic was it lost that the true meaning and celebration of Christmas is birth of my Savior. If you have never read the Christmas story from scripture please take a moment and read my sidebar. May you be blessed now and in the new year. May you find God's peace that passes understanding. May He bless you and keep you for all the days of your lives. Merry Christmas to you all. We are going to Peking Gourmet Inn this evening. I will feast on Peking duck, spring onions and plum sauce. Then I will turn my attn to Jeo-Yan Shrimp, not with the normal dipping sauce they serve with it but with the creamy yellow garlic sauce instead. My mouth is already watering. I wish I could bring you all with me. This is one tradition I will NEVER want to miss.

I am strayng from my normal Christmas fare this year. I am blaming it on being pregnant. I just do not have a taste for ham at all. I think beef will better suit me -and I hope Steven and the girls as well. It seems I am blaming alot of things on being pregnant these days. Traditionally I would serve ham, turkey, dressing with gravy, sweet potatoes, collards, deviled eggs, cranberry sauce, red velvet cake and orange cake. Similar to our Thanksgiving dinner yet different. I am planning to serve for our Christmas day dinner the following menu:
A Christmas Menu
25 December 2005

Standing Rib Roast (Prime Rib)
with horseradish sauce

Yorkshire Pudding

Herb Potatoes

Asparagus Spears
with lemon and butter

Spinach Salad

Red Velvet Cake
Breakfast will be served with fresh baked cinnamon rolls, fruit, and mimosas (made with sparkling white grape juice for the children). What will you be serving or expect to be served?

Thursday Thirteen #4

Thirteen Things about Angie
***UPDATED to add cinnamon roll recipe***
1. The doctor gave me a strong antibiotic. It is working. My face no longer hurts from the sinus to the bones and the start of it moving to my chest has stopped. Another day or so and I should be all better for Christmas. 2. The first Christmas Steven and I had together the gremlins moved in. We were visited by pestulance in the form of flying spiders on our fresh cut Christmas tree. We were on orange alert for possible headlice which ended up being code red. Steven had pink eye and other ailments. 3. The second Christmas the girls were sick. The plague was visited upon us in several forms. Also we had appliances that decided to go belly up. Not to mention we were in the middle of negotiating the contract for this house and my nerves were completely shot. We also had to replace the dishwasher on Thanksgiving. 4. This year we are being visited but the Ghost of Christmas flood. The septic tank had to be pumped because things were backing up in my downstairs bathtub. The next day we are still having major back up problems. The plumbing/septic company returned to snake the pipes. Several hundreds of dollars later we can now bathe and flush the toilets but the washing machine drain lines have to be replumbed. 5. Next year better not be the year of the famine. :-/ 6. This conversation happened with Steven at work. "last year you gave her a farm for Christmas. How are you going to top that this year?" He had no snappy reply. Last year we did not sign the papers on the house until January 25th. This year he has topped it by a long shot. He has given me something I never had before. A baby boy, only he won't arrive until January also. We have had to spend so much on repairs lately I asked him not to spend the money on the Nikon D70s. It can wait. I would like a bluetick hound. But I can't see that happening. 7. Steven and the girls are going somewhere this morning. No mother's are allowed. I am tired of begging them not to spend money on me for Christmas. He won't listen. 8. I need to get through today and tomorrow and then, AND THEN!! we get to go eat peking duck. My mouth is watering already at the thought!!! 9. I need to call and get a load of firewood delivered. 10. I have a washer full of wet soppy clothes waiting for Steven to repair the plumbing so I can finish my chores. 11. I love waking up on Christmas morning and my house being perfectly clean. Not one thing out of place. Everything sparkling and shiney. Breakfast mostly prepared. Coffee pot waiting to be switched on. Children not allowed to come downstairs until Steven and I are up, the coffee is on, the tree is lit and the camera ready to capture the moment. The kids HATE it. Hahahaha I am so mean. 12. This is our first Christmas in our house. There is something very special about it. I want to freeze time and save itin a bottle so I can uncap it every once in a while and take adeep sniff. My house will be scented with lemons and oranges and apples and cinnamon. there will be awesome cinnamon rolls waiting to be popped in the oven while the kids are opening their Santa trove of treasures. I'll try to remember to post the recipe for the cinnamon rolls. They are the BEST. 13. Thank you all for being so sweet and kind. Thank you for the friendships and acquaintances we have formed over these past months. Thank you for listening when I whine and gripe. Thank you for the sholders to cry on when things aren't so well. May you also be blessed now and in the new year. May you find God's peace that passes understanding. May He bless you and keep you for all the days of your lives. Currier and Ives with Norman Rockwell Christmas

| | Comments (13)
Welcome to my very own Currier and Ives Christmas house via Norman Rockwell. We are resplendant in our decorated glory with snow covered lawn which is melting and ice covered back deck which is not melting.
christmasrockwell_small.jpg
This is us happily looking out the window watching Steven locate and dig up the septic tank because we have shit backing up in the downstairs bathtub!! I swear if one of those girls has flushed something upstairs and it is causing these problems they will get NOTHING from Santa. Nothing, I say! In other news my head cold has now moved to my chest and I feel like death warmed over. I pretty much slept the past few days and did little to nothing else. I am headed to the doctor this morning. All I can say is woe to him if he tells me I can't take any medications because I am pregnant BECAUSE I know that is bullshit BECAUSE I read too many blogs with women who take far more than some cold meds and have normal healthy babies! If I can get some relief I'll be able to make the rounds and visit all of your lovely journals tomorrow, -maybe. **I have to proofread Gracie's birthday post before I publish it. Look for it later.

Baby, It's Cold Outside*

| | Comments (11)
I. Snow is falling in giant fluffy flakes. It is supposed to change into a mix of snow and rain and ice as the day progresses. This is our third winter storm in the past two weeks. I can tell this is going to be a real fun winter. We get more snow than northern Va because we are in the foothills of the Blue Ridge mountains. Aren't we lucky?
kitten.jpg
II. It is so very cold and icey. The kitten just begs to come in where it is warm. Because it can't keep its paws off my Christmas tree he must be in his basket when the kids are not keeping up with him. This is how he sleeps in front of the fire. His head is turned upside down and his little paws are up around his face like a baby. He is the funniest thing to watch while sleeping. I know you are sick of hearing about our Christmas party BUT ... III. I had not planned to buy paper goods. I had planned to use my cocktail service I have been collecting for the past 15 or more years. While I was in Costco a couple of weeks ago they had impressive paper goods at a reasonable price so I gave in to the convience and purchased the plates, napkins and disposable flatware. In an effort to save myself on the clean up afterward.
reflections.jpg

disposable flatware

Now, I am one of those women who counts the good silver after every use out of fear one piece might accidentally get thrown away. It is for this very reason I wanted to use the disposable. It never occured to me that disposable flatware would look so real. In fact I hadn't given it much thought until MommaK's husband jumped from his chair and fished a fork out of the garbage thinking someone had thrown away my silver. As I think about it, then and now, I wonder if he has had the task of searching the garbage bags for his wife's silver somewhere in the past. IV. MommaK also brought us a tin of cookies which we opened last night. OHHHHHHH there are some damn good cookies in there and not just cookies! She has mixed in fudge and kisses with all sorts of cookies. I must tell you she is an excellent cookie baker! With all of us nibbling we have eaten almost half of them. Yummmmmmmmy!! V. I have a friend in Australia. My friend sends me things. Things I can buy here but at many many times more the cost of it in Australia. My friend sends me 100% pure eucalyptus and tea tree oils. These little 3oz bottles contain liquid gold. I put a little of the oil in the humidifier and plug it in at night. After two night of sleeping in the vapors of the Scents of Australia the sinus pain, pressure, feeling of being raw completely down the back of the throat is COMPLETELY GONE! when Gracie is having difficulty breathing, I do the same thing for her. It helps better than any prescription drug ever has. So if you know someone or you want to search online and buy it, I promise you the natural healing powers of eucalyptus oil and tea tree oil is all you need. Tea tree oil is a natural antibiotic also. Every home, every first aid kit needs 1 bottle each of these oils. I can't live without them. My friend is sending me a new shipment this week as I am painfully low on my last supply -which has lasted over a year because I use it sparingly and dole it out like bits of treasure from my chest. VI. We are invited to a neighbors Christmas party tomorrow night. For a hostess gift I have been dipping pretzel rods in chocolate them rolling them in nuts or crushed peppermints. I picked up a couple of candy cane striped tumblers at the dollar store to stand them up in then will wrap them in Christmas cellophane. This is a an excellent gift! It looks lovely. It is homemade. It is very tastey. Try it. Your friends will love it! *From my new favorite holiday CD: Dean Martin, Christmas with Dino

Two Weeks Before Christmas

| | Comments (8)
Steven's brother and his lovely wife welcomed baby boy #4 into the world yesterday afternoon. I am REALLY ready for my turn, next!! This cold that was given to me by grimey little children living in this house -has kicked my butt. I can do little but lay around on the couch and nod off at the oddest moments. Oh, yes, getting plenty of rest for the weary. Maybe I can answer some email and write a few more comments today. I am in super slow motion! Thanks to Hope for sending me this one. The Night Before Christmas For Mothers It was the night before Christmas, when all through the abode Only one creature was stirring, and she was cleaning the commode. The children were finally sleeping, all snug in their beds, While visions of Nintendo and Barbie, flipped through their heads. The dad was snoring in front of the TV, With a half-constructed bicycle on his knee. So only the mom heard the reindeer hooves clatter, Which made her sigh, "Now what's the matter?" With toilet bowl brush still clutched in her hand, She descended the stairs, and saw the old man. He was covered with ashes and soot, which fell with a shrug. "Oh great!!" muttered the mom, "Now I have to clean the rug." "Ho-Ho-Ho!!" cried Santa, "I'm glad you're awake. Your gift was especially difficult to make." "Thanks, Santa, but all I want is some time alone." "Exactly!!" he chuckled, "I've made you a clone." "A clone?" she asked, "What good is that? Run along, Santa. I've no time for chit-chat." It was the mother's twin. Same hair, same eyes, same double chin. "She'll cook, she'll dust, she'll mop every mess. You'll relax, take it easy, watch the Young and the Restless." "Fantastic!!" the mom cheered. "My dream come true! I'll shop. I'll read. I'll sleep a whole night through!" From the room above, the youngest began to fret. "Mommy?!? I'm scared, and I'm wet." The clone replied, "I'm coming, sweetheart." "Hey," the mom smiled, "She knows her part." The clone changed the small one, and hummed a tune, As she bundled the child, in a blanket cocoon. "You're the best mommy ever. I really love you." The clone smiled and sighed, "I love you, too." The mom frowned and said, "Sorry, Santa, no deal. That's my child's love that she's trying to steal." Smiling wisely Santa said, "To me it is clear, Only one loving mother is needed here." The mom kissed her child, and tucked her into bed. "Thank you, Santa, for clearing my head. I sometimes forget it won't be very long, When they'll be too old, for my cradle-song." The clock on the mantle began to chime. Santa whispered to the clone, "It works every time." With the clone by his side, Santa said, "Good night. Merry Christmas, Mom. You'll be alright."

Put A Bow On It and Call It Wrapped

| | Comments (9)
The invite read 6-9pm. The last guest left at 12:02am. An hour later we went to bed. We put very few left overs in the refrigerator. What surprised me was we had plenty of beer and wine leftover but not one cola left in the cooler. The ornament exchange did not go well. Many people did not bring an ornament. What to do? I quietly asked that people take their ornament back with them. Some did, some didn't. I don't know who left the few ornaments under my tree. I did send everyone home with ornaments I made from Georgia cotton and little stockings filled with candies, children recieved a santa hat. Is it just me or is it terribly wrong to show up at a party empty handed when the invite specifically asked for a small inexpensive christmas tree ornament then proceed to eat and drink your fill and breeze out the door? Does pointing this out here in my journal make a not so gracious hostess? Yesterday we nibbled on a little of this and that. Today we are having the leftover ham in a potato and cheddar cassrole. The few sweets are going to school with Gracie for her party. That's it. All the food is G - O - N - E. This was my last hurrah. I am whooped. Sunday was spent mostly on the couch or napping. We cleaned a little here and there. Put things away as the dishwasher finished each load. Other than that not much happened here. Steven and I both have come down with head colds. He ran a low grade fever yesterday evening. I am trying to struggle through med free in an effort to give the best care to the baby. I have about 6 weeks left to go and I promise you I am done. The house is decorated. The party is over. Gracie's birthday is Saturday. I have plans to do nothing but vegetate and incubate until Christmas Eve at which point we will go out to dinner for the best Peking duck ever. January 2nd all the decorations start to come down. After that I plan to do NOTHING until this baby is born. I am exhausted. I can only hope people enjoyed themselves as much as we did. Of 40 guests who RSVP'd to attend we had 30 guests in our home. The most special guests were this lovely lady, her husband and 1 of her gorgeous daughters. I did not get to spend nearly as much time with her as I wanted to because I had to mix and mingle and be the hostess. If I had my druthers I would have locked her away and we would have talked all evening. Not only is she as sweet and lovely as she appears in her words. OMG people, she is gorgeous! And her hair! She has yummy sex-kitten long curly hair that is gorgeous shades of blonde. She is also generous. She brought us cookies! And baby gifts! And Gracie a birthday gift. My biggest fear - she thinks we are lame and boring.

Judy and Hope, I found this about Windows XP. It looks like Microsoft took out the code and now the Java needs a plugin for some editions. Try updating windows with the service packs available through Microsoft and check out this plugin.
Thirteen Things about Angie
1. I didn't get to bake yesterday. I'll try again today. 2. I am not super woman. I just get a lot done by planning for it and sometimes putting other things off to accomplish a goal. I also have help. I didn't climb the ladder or climb out a second story window for Christmas lights. 3. I don't do well just sitting with my feet up. 4. Thank you all for the compliments on my decorations. I do it for the joy and excitement it brings my kids. I know you all can imagine how a child's face and eyes light up when they take in all that is the magic and wonder of the Christmas season. 5. I am serving a buffet style dinner for my Christmas party Saturday night. I finally settled on a menu. There will probably be too much food. 6. We recieved a huge box in the mail today from Steven's aunts. 7. It was a baby shower in a box. 8. It has babyshower foods (cookies etc, with plates and napkins), a balloon, a diaper bag, a baby book, lovely baby toys and spoons, along with several outfits. They were beyond generous. 9. We were very surprised. 10. We will have one very well dressed baby in designer jeans and polo shirts. 11. I am now sick of the snow. I have my photos. It can go away now. Please. It is supposed to snow again this week. 12. Another online journalist is coming to our Christmas party. 13. I am soooooooooooo excited to meet her and her lovely family. I wish all of you could come as well. Links to other Thursday Thirteens! 1. MommaK 2. Raehan

Mr. Darcy, Snow, Swiffers and Tide To Go

| | Comments (13)
graciekitten.jpg
Mr. Darcy has decided he doesn't like the snow and refuses to stand in it for any reason. Making the animals go out for bathroom breaks results in pretty much having to chase them out the door.
Have you got one of these gadgets? It is not fancy. It isn't electric. It is a diaper pad on a stick with a scrubber pad and a battery powered spray bottle. But I tell you it will save the hell out of your back if you have as many floors to mop as we have in this house. I am not one to buy all the new fandangle money wasters that come out on the market but I am glad I bought this one. It really did the job! Oh and don't be taken in by the spam about Swiffer harming pets. That is an untrue urban legend that really needs to stop. I guess a company as large as Proctor and Gamble will always have to fight some form of lies and slander about their products. And while I am hawking products this morning ... the Tide To Go stain pen -ROCKS! Handy dandy little stain remover has found a home here with me. Today I am baking. Hershey's kisses cookies and Red Velvet Cake. Judy, are you using Windows XP? If so the snow applet in my head graphic might be blocked as a pop would. Look at the top of the page and see if you have the little message that XP blocked something from loading on the page. If so, unblocked it by right clicking and selecting the proper option. I am still hunting for other reasons why you can't see it. Here is a screenshot so you can see the graphic not in action but as I see it on my laptop.

Thursday 13 ... Part Deux

Thirteen Things about Angie
1. I am far too busy for any single one person! I need to change my background it will have to wait until tonight or tomorrow. Deal with it. 2. Most of the Christmas decorations are finished. I said most, not all. I have boxes I need to take to the attic and Steven has some lights that went belly up last night. 3. Yesterday I had to do the fasting 3 hour blood glucose test. I hate those things. I hate getting stuck with needles even more. 4. I have my regular OB appointment today. I have to go every 2 weeks now. I HATE going to the doctor! 5. Most of my plans for the Christmas party we are having are falling into place. The menu is still not complete. I seem to change my mind alot according to my pregnant moodiness. 6. Why is it some people cannot seem to RSVP in a timely fashion? 7. Gracie seems to have grown up over night. I was just looking at her this morning and she seems far older than 7 years. 8. Steven is working from home today. Yahhh me -'cept I have a stupid doctors appointment and won't be here most of the late morning and early afternoon. 9. Do you know Braxton-Hicks contractions hurt? 10. I am starting to leak milk. Things are happening too early for me. 11. I want it to snow while my Christmas decorations are up so I can use the photo for next years christmas card. 12. I can't believe I want it to snow. Snow bothers me after 1 day. 13. The fire is burning, the room is cozy. Why do I have to leave my house this morning?!?! Arghhh!! Links to other Thursday Thirteens! MommaK Raehan
