Ken's Steakhouse Dressing

When looking for a dressing for your plate of yard clippings look no farther than the Ken's steakhouse brand. Pay close attention to the lables and you will be surprised to find 1 and 0 carbs salad dressings that taste no different than the regular dressings.

We have tried nearly every flavor of dressing and so far like very single one.

Most of the light dressings (check the lables) come in at 1 carb. The ceasar dressing has 0 carbs and does not have an anchovie paste after taste.

Try the Ken's. Your carbs are counting on you.

Hienz 1 Carb Ketchup

Kate introduced me to the heinz ketchup after a not so good experience with the Walden Farms variety.

The Heinz tastes just like regular ketchup only maybe like a cheaper brand. That is not to short change this product.

1 tablespoon of the Heinz is 1 carb. Not too shabby for the feel and taste of one of the most favorite condiments for meat.

There really isn't much more to say about it other than it earns itself 5 fatladdy jiggles.

Walden Farms No Carb Ketchup

Colby is a ketchup eater. This diet has wrecked her eating habits as far as having meats with ketchup.

When I saw the Walden Farms brand listed as 0 calaries and 0 carbs I felt it was worth try. The cost of the bottle at over $5 almost made me change my mind but I didn't. I am trying to help her not make her stumble.

We have tried some of the Walden Farm items in the past and while they have promise they often come up short on y expectations. They actually perpetuate the notion that diet food tastes like fake and rubbery sustitutes for the real thing. I tried to keep an open mind this time as I always do when trying something new for the first time.

Initially tasting the product I didn't expect alot. I wasn't too let down in that reguard. It tasted more like cocktail sauce to me than ketchup.

For supper I had cooked steak and shrimp. With the beef the sauce did not taste at all like real ketchup. With the shrimp it didn't really taste like cocktail sauce. Adding grated horseradish made it a fairly good cocktail sauce.

For ketchup it is a loser. For cocktail sauce it is a winner. A double winner at no calories and no carbs.

Advant Edge Drinks

EAS is the makers of the Advant Edge low carb shakes. I first found this brand at Walmart when they were clearancing out a lot of stuff in the pharmacy during a store remodeling job.

I purchased a 4 pack of the chocolate fudge flavor for under $4. I like this drink much better than the Atkins equivalent. The chocolate taste is better and in general the price is lower.

Later I went back and picked up the strawberry and the french vanilla flavors. Both 4 packs for the same clearanced price of $4.

The strawberry is sort of like drinking strawberry quick. It has a pleasant taste and little aftertaste.

Not true with the vanilla. The vanilla tastes like water that has had vanilla extract dumped in. I do not care for the vanilla at all. However, Colby likes it just fine.

I was thrilled with the fact that I could drink this shake in place of lunch and only consume 1 carb. That is major for an 11oz drink.

Imagine my surprise when we picked up a new package of the advant Edge shakes and found they had change the formula.

I thought I had mistaken the carb count. I dug through the garbage for an old container so that I could compare it to a new one. I was right! The fuzzy brain syndrome of ketosis was not making me think I had lost it. The new drinks are 2carbs and 110 calories.

I do not understand at all why they would boost the carbs. 1 carbs is sacrificed for 2 extra grams of protein and an added 10 calories. It makes no sense.

While this shake in the chocolate flavor is my drink of preference I can no longer judge it against the Atkins Advantage Shake.

They both have 2 carbs now. The hike in carbs is a blow to my grading system. Due to this change I can only give them 4 fatlady jiggles.

Low Carb Brownies **Updated

Dixie Carb Counters makes several baked good mixes with the tag line Health food that tastes like junk food.

I was eager to try the brownies.

I took that tag line to heart and ordered the brownie mix claiming 1 carb per serving - 1 2inch x 2inch brownie.

To bake the mix I needed 2 oz of bitter unsweetened chocolate, 1 stick butter, 1/3 cup heavt whipping cream, 2 eggs for thick brownies or 3 eggs for more cake like brownies. Bake at 325 for exactly 12 minutes.

I used 2 eggs and the brownies came out like cake anyway.

The pan came out and it certainly looked like brownies.

They look so promising.

They taste like, well, nothing. They don't have much of a taste at all but they do have the bitter undertone of dark unsweetened chocolate.

This was a $4 and change experiment that wasn't successful. We will eat these, 1 carb at a time.

However I will not buy this mix again.

**Update!

Having sat on the counter and 'cured" for several hours the brownie flavor has changed. They taste more like dark chocolate cake without icing. I might be tempted to buy this mix to make a chocolate cake if I could find something for icing.

Atkins Advantage Shakes

I think this one is going to depend on everyone's own personal taste. The Atkins drinks leave a vitamin-sh not quite right after taste in my mouth. I don't find them as rich nor as filling as say the Advant Edge drinks.

The Atkins drinks also cost $1-3 more/4-pack than other drinks that are offered in the low carb catagory for protein drinks.

If I had to drink them I would. They aren't that bad. The chocolate and strawberry flavors are the better of the offerings. They are not that great of a flavor though compared to the same flavors in the Advant Edge line of shakes.

The major flaw is the carb content. These drinks have 2 impact carbs. That may not seem like a lot but when you are counting carbs it is a giant amount. Every single carb counts. I won't drink 2 carbs when I know I could be drinking a drink with only 1 nest carb (and paying less to do so).

The Atkins Advantage shakes come in designer flavors: Strawberry Supreme Shake, Creamy Vanilla Shake, Chocolate Delight Shake, Café Mocha Shake, Chocolate Royale Shake, Vanilla Caramel Creme Shake. I have tried all the flavors and they all have the same undertone of taste. I really don't like them all that much.

These shakes do the job of filling you up. They are low carb, high protein but more expensive than I am comfortable paying.

Based on price, after taste and that extra carb I am giving them 3 fatlady jiggles.

Hood Calorie Countdown Dairy Beverage - Chocolate

Hood is the maker of 3 varieties of low carb milk. The lable calls it a dairy beverage.

This is the third in the line up of milk products. And it is CHOCOLATE!

My discussion of this product is limited due to the fact that it is chocolate milk on a low carb scale and it is really good. Although it is really thick too. It is rich. And it is delicious.

I find it a bit too thick for my likes so I use the fat free milk and thin it out, half fat free and half chocolate. It does not alter the rich chocolatey flavor in any way.

4 net carbs! Can you believe it?

Hood is getting 4 fatlady jiggles for this product. I withhold 1 because it is a thick drink and I do not like thick drinks unless it is a real milkshake made with icecream and gives me brain freeze.

Hood Calorie Countdown Dairy Beverage - Fat Free

Hood is the maker of 3 varieties of low carb milk. The lable calls it a dairy beverage.

My favorite is the fat free <strike>milk</strike> dairy beverage.

I am a drinker of milk. Normally I buy 2% milk for the kids and I find that at times it is too thick for my liking. When I buy skim milk it is just too watery. With the Carb Countdown Fat Free it seems to be just right.

This is not exactly like drinking a big glass of cold cow milk. It is not like drinking a big glass of soy milk either. I love vanilla soy milk with its silky smooth texture. The carb countdown is somewhere in between.

The taste isn't the best but it isn't bad either. When you want a sandwich and a nice cold glass of milk this is the answer for the low carb lifestyle.

Because it is not exactly like milk and it doesn't tastes exacly like milk I am giving it 4 fatlady jiggles. It passes my lips and I don't mind it going down.

Hood Calorie Countdown Dairy Beverage - 2%

Hood is the makers of 3 varieties of low carb milk. The lable calls it a dairy beverage.

The first is a 2% low fat milk.

There isn't much to tell. It has the flavor of skim milk.

For my taste it is too thick. I usually buy the fat free variety. when it is not available I buy the 2% choice. When I drink this milk product I cut it by half with water. The only way I can even begin to explain my definition of 'thick' is to say it is like drinking a thin set pudding or jello that is not gelled. Get the idea?

It tastes fine. It is low carb.

Because I do not like thick drinks (I even cut orange juice by half with water) I am giving the 2% dairy beverage only 3 fatlady jiggles.

FatLady Jiggles:

Arnold's Carb Counting Bread

Arnold's has baked up two delicious loaves of low carb bread in the form of Arnold Carb Counting 100% Wheat and Arnold Carb Counting MultiGrain.

I have been eating this bread since I was pregnant with my son. I have made sandwiches and served it as breakfast toast. On every occassion this is a perfect slice of bread. It doesn't have an odd lingering flavor. It doesn't taste like cardboard. It is almost a perfect slice of bread.

When I think of bread I think of Little Miss Sunbeam Old Fashion Round Top bread. The softest most perfect sliced bread for pb&j sandwiches. Sunbeam is a 5 star bread and then some. It is sunbeam that I compare the Arnold's to.

Arnold's bread is soft, smells heavenly and keeps well on the kitchen counter (doesn't need refrigerating). It is moist but the one thing that stands out is it is not as tender as the full carb bread. It is just a bit tough. Not so much that most people would notice. My husband surely would not see any difference whatsoever in Arnold's and a full carb whole wheat bread.

Based on the fact that a person can be on a low carb lifestyle and still eat bread is amazing. The food manufacturing industry has come a long way, baby, from the diet days of 20 years ago. The only difference is (other than the whole grain) is the tenderness of the bread.

Each slice of Arnold's whole wheat and multigrain bread is 6 net carbs. 12 carbs total for a sandwich. Regular bread is 42grams or more of carbs. Arnold's isn't that super thin bread that seems as if you get a half slice stretched to full size.

Product: Arnold's Carb Counting Bread
Serving Size: 1 slice
Calories per serving: 60
Total NET Carbs: 6g
Price: $2.19/ loaf

I give this bread 4 fat ladies. I am withholding 1 fatlady because the bread has a bit of toughness to it.

Nestle Carb Select

Nestle has introduced a line of chocolate candies for the low carb eaters of this world.

I am a snob when it comes to chocolate and prefer only to have things made from dutch cocoa or the luxury of belgian chocolate.

On this weight loss plan I have set up to follow those things are not allowed. Imagine how tickled I was to find a chocolate candy that was larger than a dime, I could have more than one as a serving and the chocolate actually tasted like my favorite deep dark chocolate.

Nestles has hit a home run. They offer a chocolate bar (crunch, babyruth or turtle) or a bag of mini bars. The crunch bars are 4 pieces/serving for the low carb price of 4grams/serving. The babyruth is a 2g/serving value.

Think about it - one chocolatey serving spread over the day, 4 times to put chocolate candy in your mouth, and it is only 1 carb each time you indulge in 1 piece. Isn't that just wild when you think of the numbers?

I say get some of these and enjoy the chocolate while the pounds melt away.

I am not even going to bother with the nutritional value. It is chocolate for goodness sakes!

I am also awarding it the full 5 FatLady Jiggles.

Dreamfields Pasta

I found Dreamfields pasta products on a dash through a Foodlion store near an uppercrust subdivision back when I was in the third trimester of my last pregnancy. It was the only grocery store I have ever seen it offered in the area in which I live. Since that time the store was taken over by Blooms and the product is no longer offered on the shelf.

Dreamfields Pasta

I have 1 box of elbows left in my pantry. It is being held onto tightly for a nice fat mac and cheese casserole on a cold sunday afternoon.

I know to many people with a tongue for pasta it is not pasta unless it is Semolina pasta. Guess what? This is! By whatever means this pasta is manufactured I do not know. They have managed to take out all of the stuff a low carb eater can't have.

It is a very nice pasta. Once covered with sauce it is the same as any other pasta product on the market shelf. Same taste. Same texture. Same satisfaction.

The Dreamfields pasta has 5 digestible carbs per serving. It is not a skimpy scant serving either. A serving is 1/2 - 3/4 cup dried pasta. This is a very nice portion after cooking!

Knowing full well that most of us eat at least a cup or more of pasta at a meal this is an incredible low carb count.

Dreamfields offers lasagne, penne, rotini, elbows, spaghetti and linguine. You may visit the Dreamfields website and order by the box or case if you cannot find this product in your local markets.

As far as dried pasta goes I realize that $2.49 a box is expensive compared to the regular shelf brands in your market. It made me think twice also.

Instead of serving everyone the low carb pasta I simply boil two pots of water and cook the low carb pasta serving separate. It is much easier and far more satisfying to sit down and everyone eat a spaghetti dinner together.

I do not think you will go wrong trying this pasta.

Let's look at the lable:

Price: $2.49/box ( .31 cents per serving)

Flatout Wraps

I picked up a package of Flatout Light Original Bread in the grocery store today. Reason one because it has low-carb plastered across the front. Reason two because I am so struggling with the need for bread!

For supper we used it as a sandwich wrap. Colby and I layered spinach and mixed baby greens, very thin slice of tomato, thin slices of pork tenderloin that I broiled with garlic, salt, pepper and a drizzle of olive oil.

Now - on to the product review:

The package of flat bread contained 6 pieces approximately 5inches wide by 8 inches long. The bread is whole grain -100% stone ground wheat.

They were soft and smelled delicious. They did not tear like a cold tortilla will. They rolled easily without tearing, breaking or crumbling or splitting like pita bread.

They tasted even better than they smelled. If you love bread you will love these. In no way do they taste like 'health food' or 'diet food'. In the past I grew so tired of the cardboard taste of the low carb items but now things have come a long way, baby.

The photo on the package shows them used for pizzas. The consistancy of the bread will make these perfect for a thin pizza for 1 for a meal. We are going to try them for lunch tomorrow as a pizza. I'll let you know how they do.
